Vietjet Air has announced the launch of its first direct flights between Vietnam and New Zealand, linking Ho Chi Minh City and Auckland in what is expected to enhance economic, tourism, and cultural ties between the two nations.
The announcement was made on Thursday at a high-profile event in Hanoi, attended by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, and business leaders from both countries.
The milestone comes as Vietnam and New Zealand deepen their diplomatic relationship, having recently elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
The launch of the new air service aligns with this strengthened cooperation and coincides with the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations.
Starting in September 2025, Vietjet will operate four round-trip flights per week on the Ho Chi Minh City-Auckland route.
The airline said the new service will offer affordable and efficient travel options, reducing travel time between the two destinations.
Vietjet passengers will have access to multiple seat classes, including Business, SkyBoss, Deluxe, and Eco. The airline’s in-flight menu will feature a mix of Vietnamese and international cuisine, served by a professional cabin crew.
At the event, PM Luxon welcomed the new route, saying the service will significantly enhance connectivity and strengthen people-to-people links between Vietnam and New Zealand.
He added that beyond tourism, the flights will create new opportunities in trade and education, further fostering economic growth.
Auckland, known for its stunning coastal scenery, vibrant cultural scene, and high quality of life, serves as a gateway to New Zealand’s natural wonders and world-renowned filming locations.
Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s bustling economic and tourism hub, celebrated for its modern skyline, rich history, and diverse culinary landscape.
The new direct route is expected to boost investment, tourism, education, and cultural exchanges, further strengthening the partnership between the two nations.
The service is also part of Vietjet’s broader expansion strategy, which aims to connect Vietnam with major international destinations, including Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China, South Korea, and India.
