Deputy chairman of the People’s Committee of Hanoi Chu Xuan Dung signed on Monday afternoon an official decision to allow students from first to sixth grades in all of the capital’s 30 districts and towns to resume direct class attendance from Wednesday.

Dung came to the decision after considering the municipal Department of Education and Training’s proposal, which assessed that the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in the city had undergone positive changes, with the number of infections among teachers and students declining.

In addition, more than 75 percent of parents in the city’s 30 districts and towns have given a nod to reopening in-person classes in surveys conducted by local educational administration bodies.

Therefore, grade-1-to-6 students across the capital are scheduled to resume offline lessons, including semi-boarding classes, from April 6 after a suspension for pandemic control.

Meanwhile, kindergarteners will remain home as the city’s educational authorities pledge to organize their return to school on a voluntary basis, with parental approval needed.

Deputy chairman Dung requested that the municipal educational department timely update schools and grassroots-level authorities on COVID-19 prevention measures as per the guidelines of the Ministry of Education and Training and the Ministry of Health in preparation for the school reopening.

Hanoi has documented over 1.49 million of COVID-19 cases during the ongoing outbreak.

Its daily record has decreased by more than 80 percent from a peak of 32,650 cases on March 8.

The city has administered over 6.1 million and 6.2 million first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccine to its eight-million population, respectively, according to the national COVID-19 vaccination portal.
