Two students of the Vietnamese team won second prize at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (Regeneron ISEF) 2024, organized from May 11-17 in Los Angeles, the U.S.
At the award ceremony held on May 17 (local time) in Los Angeles, Nguyen Le Quoc Bao and Le Tuan Hy, 12th graders at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in Ho Chi Minh City, jointly received the second prize for their project in the Systems Software category.
The project, entitled “Integration of deep learning into automatic volumetric cardiovascular dissention & reconstruction in simulated 3D space for medical practice,” aims to support doctors in providing diagnostic results from computed tomography (CT) scans.
In addition, it can be used to serve medical practice in schools.
This project also grasped a special award presented by the U.S.'s Association for Computing Machinery.
“The second prize is the highest achievement that Vietnamese students have earned after 12 years of participating in the annual Regeneron ISEF,” the Ministry of Education and Training said, adding that Vietnam won the third prize last year.
The project of Bao and Hy also earned the first prize at the National Science and Technology Competition organized by the ministry in late March this year.
This year, the Vietnamese team of 17 students took part in the competition with nine projects selected from the 149 entries of the aforementioned national contest.
These projects included one individual and eight collective projects, in nine fields, set up by students from many localities in the country.
The Regeneron ISEF 2024 attracted nearly 1,700 high school students with 1,353 projects in 21 fields from 67 countries, according to news site VnExpress.
About 25 percent of these projects won first to fourth prizes.
