All eight students of the Vietnamese team competing at the 24th Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO 2024) won medals, including one gold, one silver, and six bronzes, the Ministry of Education and Training reported on Sunday.

The gold medal went to Than The Cong, a grade-12 student of the Bac Giang High School for the Gifted in northern Bac Giang Province, while the silver was earned by Ha Duyen Phuc, another 12th grader from the Lam Son High School for the Gifted in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa.

The six bronze medals were awarded to five grade-12 students and one grade-11 student from five provinces and cities, namely Hanoi, Hai Phong, Bac Giang, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An.

The APhO 2024 was conducted from June 3 to 10 in Malaysia, attracting 28 teams with 208 contestants from 27 countries and territories.

This is the first APhO that has been organized in this country, with the largest ever number of participating teams.

The competition is divided into two sections: a five-hour theoretical examination and a five-hour laboratory experiment, consisting of either one or two experiments, according to the APhO 2024’s website.

The contest’s theoretical exam is prepared based on modern physical applications, such as fountains and fiber optic cables, or on the results of astrophysics research published in the British scientific journal Nature.

The practical exam is prepared on the basis of interesting experiments on gyroscopes, a device used to maintain orientation and direction, often used in navigation systems like those in ships, planes, and vehicles.

The achievements of the Vietnamese team at the APhO 2024 are better than those over the past two years.

The team won four bronze medals and four certificates of merit in 2023 and one silver, two bronzes and five certificates of merit in 2022.

Vietnam began to participate in APhO in 2000, the first year of the annual competition.

So far, the country’s best results at APhO contests were in 2018, when the Vietnamese team won four golds, two silvers, and two bronzes, according to the Vietnam News Agency
