A bitter cold front is expected to hit the northern and north-central regions this weekend, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
On Tuesday, early morning temperatures plummeted below 10 degrees Celsius in several locations, with Mount Mau Son in Lang Son Province recording a frigid two degrees Celsius, a two-degree drop from the previous day.
Other high-altitude areas, including Pha Din in Dien Bien Province, Trung Khanh in Cao Bang Province, and Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province hovered around five to six degrees Celsius.
In Hanoi, temperature readings in Son Tay, Hoai Duc, and Ba Vi registered 14 degrees Celsius, while inner-city areas like Lang and Ha Dong reported 15 degrees Celsius.
The cold weather is expected to persist across the northern and north-central regions through Wednesday, during which mountainous areas will experience severe cold, while the central provinces and cities from Quang Binh to Hue may feel the chill.
The lowest temperatures in this cold wave are estimated between 11 and 14 degrees Celsius in lowland areas, 8-10 degrees Celsius in mountainous regions, and below six degrees Celsius in some high-altitude locations. Hanoi's temperatures will range from 12 to 14 degrees Celsius.
The central region of Quang Binh to Hue can expect temperatures between 14 and 17 degrees Celsius.
By Thursday, the cold front is expected to weaken, and temperatures could rise by two to four degrees Celsius. Daytime highs in Hanoi will climb to 21-23 degrees Celsius, with warm sunshine, while nighttime temperatures will hover around 17 degrees Celsius.
Another strong cold front is anticipated to sweep the north this weekend, bringing widespread rain and drizzle. Meteorologists predict that cold air masses will remain active throughout February.
