The Vietnamese team, Hong Bang 1, consisting of three students from two high schools in Ho Chi Minh City, has won third place in the 2024 World Robot Olympiad (WRO) in Turkey.
The news was reported on Tuesday by Hoang Dang Quang, the coach of the Hong Bang 1 team and a teacher at Hong Bang Middle School.
All three students are ten graders and were once enrolled in Hong Bang Middle School.
The team included Hoang Chan Nguyen and Nguyen Thien Nhan from the Ho Chi Minh City High School for Gifted Students and Vu Duc Hung Anh from Le Quy Don High School.
They were awarded third prize in the 11-15 age group in the RoboMission category.
The 2024 WRO took place from November 28 to 30 in Turkey’s Izmir. There were over 500 teams from 87 countries during the competition.

To win the bronze medal at the competition, which requires programming skills, robot design skills, reasonable competition tactics, and good teamwork, the team had to surpass hundreds of rivals, feeling thrilled with the outcome in the end.
There were 14 teams in total from Vietnam in the 2024 WRO 8-19 age group.
Besides Hong Bang 1, another Vietnamese team, GV2-HSRL-01, from Giang Vo 2 Middle School in Hanoi, won second place, Quang said.
According to its website, the WRO is a global robotics competition for young people, aiming to develop their creativity and problem-solving skills through challenging and educational robotics contests.
It challenges competitors in four categories: RoboMission, RoboSports, Future Innovators, and Future Engineers.
The first edition took place in Singapore in 2004. Over the last two decades, the WRO has attracted more than 22,000 teams from over 90 member countries.
