“You are driving on a one-way street, please turn around, thank you,” George Heydlauff, an expat who has lived in Hanoi for five years, told people violating traffic laws at a crowded crossroad of Tran Binh Trong and Tran Nhan Tong in Hai Ba Trung District on Monday.

He even grabbed the back of one motorbike, forcing the helmetless driver to go the correct way.

Obviously, he did the volunteer work during rush hourwithout the assistance of traffic cops.

The foreigner, who gave his Vietnamese name as Long, then continued to stop drivers going the wrong way and directed them to go in the right direction.

“This morning, when I took my child to school, a motorist traveling the wrong way crashed into my motorcycle. I have reported the traffic hazards here to local authorities several times but they never give me feedback, forcing me to stand here and regulate traffic,” he said.

Many people praised him for his good deed. However, some don't agree with him, saying he was not authorized to regulate traffic like that.

When asked whether or not he will continue to help regulate traffic, Long said: “I’m not sure if I can do that tomorrow because I’m busy working. But, if I have time and see more traffic violators, definitely, I will continue.”
