“Bep hat”, the Vietnamese version of Singaporean “Kitchen musical”, which competed at the Emmy Awards, is set to air on local television in October.

Directed by Phan Gia Nhat Linh and Danny Do, the local version has some striking differences from the original one, which star several celebrated Asian stars, including Christian Bautista.

The formula of the original version is delectable food, popular songs and love. The entire story takes place inside the restaurant only, which is typical of a TV show as well as a musical.

In the Vietnamese version, stories of supporting characters will be added to the storyline, together with some humor and playfulness. It will also use three-fourths of the original version’s songs, which are translated to Vietnamese to better portray the characters’ sophisticated inner and imaginary worlds.

The main songs of the film are “Boom Boom Pow”, and other famous songs such as “Losing my religion”, “High and dry”, “Last Christmas”, which are included in different contexts and with different meanings.

“Bep hat”, which revolves around the chefs, sous-chefs and assistants in a French restaurant in Vietnam, is made as a seasonal TV drama, that is, only 10-20 episodes are produced for each season. If they enjoy high viewing, they will do the next season. Each week, viewers can only watch one episode and have to wait until next week for the next one.

Each episode is a complete story which features five songs, instead of only four as in the original, and two of the five songs are popular Vietnamese pieces.

In “Bep hat”, in addition to food, dance and love, the thread will also revolve around the generational gaps and conflicts, such as the clashes between chef Hoang Quan, played by pop singer Lam Truong, with the youthful energy and creativity of his two gifted sous-chefs, also played by local pop singers Tu Vi and Van Anh.

Seasoned drama actor Thanh Loc and pop singer Phuong Thanh will also do a lot of singing in the film and Lam Truong will also perform rap and dance music with his successors. Each episode will feature a special guest, such as local film director Le Hoang.

Trained in cinematography in the U.S and present in many film projects in various roles, Nhat Linh Phan Gia and Danny Do, directors of “Bep hat” are really enthusiastic about their project.

They said “Bep hat” will open as a light-hearted, fun movie, but promises to move the viewers to tears in its final episodes.
