Vietnam’s first poem video debuted

Tuesday, March 03, 2015, 19:23 GMT+7

A poem video has just been unveiled for the first time in Vietnam by a journalist.

“Bao” (Storm), a poem in the form of a video, was introduced in Hanoi on Monday afternoon.

The poem, written by Vietnamese poet/journalist Doan Ngoc Thu and introduced in “Ve Mot Luot” (One-Way Tickets), an anthology which was published last year, is rich in images and poetic language.

Seasoned artist Le Thiet Cuong served as the poem video’s art director.

“While music videos are common in Vietnam just like elsewhere, no one has ever attempted a poem video, which is what we’re trying our hands at. More importantly, the poem’s abounding imagery and emotions have greatly inspired me, urging me to vividly portray the verses in my own interpretation,” Cuong explained.

Do Van Manh, a poetry enthusiast who showed up at the poem video launch, said that conventionally recited poems typically give him melancholy and listlessness.

The video, which incorporates vivid images, sounds and performing arts, makes the poem remarkably more approachable and intriguing, Manh noted.

Thu, the poet, said the six-minute poem video will come out in 50 copies.

Its revenue will be used to complete the construction of a road which makes it easier for elementary students in a mountainous district in the northern province of Bac Giang to go to school.

Thu and her like-minded friends raised roughly VND200 million (US$9,321) for the cause last year.
