Thousands of people throughout Vietnam will join the worldwide 2019 Earth Hour movement by switching off electricity for one hour tonight, March 30.

Earth Hour is a worldwide campaign that aims to encourage individuals, households as well as communities and businesses to turn off unnecessary power usage for one hour on a given day of each year to raise awareness on environmental issues.

This year, Hanoi celebrates the 11th edition of Earth Hour in Vietnam with a core event called ‘Lights Off, Ideas On’, which will last from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on Saturday.

The main event will be held at the Indochina Plaza in Hanoi with the attendance of many celebrity ambassadors, including Vietnamese star footballer Nguyen Quang Hai, model Chau Bui and television host Phan Anh.

In Ho Chi Minh City, celebrities including singers Le Thien Hieu and Lynk Lee will join the lights-off campaign at the municipal Youth Culture House from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm the same day.

Phuong Khanh, Miss Earth Vietnam 2018, has been named ambassador of Earth Hour 2019 in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre[NTS1] .

She will work with power companies to give presents to students and cooperate with provincial departments to encourage residents to protect the environment by reducing use of plastic bags, sorting household wastes, and saving power among many other helpful activities.

Earth Hour was first initiated in Sydney, Australia in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature and has been annually observed in 187 countries and over 7000 cities until today.

The world-acclaimed event was first observed in Vietnam in 2009 under the management of Ministry of Industry and Trade.
