A new beauty contest aimed at selecting a contestant to represent Vietnam at the upcoming Miss World pageant kicked off on Monday morning, adding another essential event to several existing competitions in the Southeast Asian country.
Organizers held a press conference in Ho Chi Minh City to announce the launch of Miss World Vietnam, which adopts the format of the famed Miss World pageant – considered one of the most reputable beauty pageants in the world.
Accordingly, the southern region’s final round of Miss World Vietnam will take place in Nha Trang City, located in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa, while the northern region’s final round is scheduled to run in Hanoi and Ha Long City, located in the northern province of Quang Ninh.
Contestants will take part in a number of events, such as the head-to-head challenge, the beauty for a purpose segment, and the top model category.
These will be held to help determine the overall winner.

Winners of the sub-contests will automatically qualify for a place in the top 10 at the final of Miss World Vietnam, which will choose the beauty queen competing for Vietnam at Miss World 2019 in Thailand in November.
Beauty pageant with several reasons
Amid several other beauty competitions that have long made a name for themselves in Vietnam, the introduction of Miss World Vietnam is believed to be an essential addition.
Before Miss World Vietnam’s debut, the title holder of Miss Vietnam, which has been held biennially since 1988, will be the country’s representative at Miss World events.
But as only one Miss Vietnam is crowned every other year, its runners-up or winners from such other beauty competitions as Miss Universe Vietnam will be the replacement for Vietnam’s participation in Miss World in the years when there is no Miss Vietnam organization.
As a result, Vietnam’s achievements at the world’s pageant vary each year, depending on who represents Vietnam at Miss World in that year, a Miss Vietnam title holder or just a runner-up.

Vietnam has sent a number of representatives to Miss World over the years.
But so far, only two beauties achieved certain success at this international pageant, including Nguyen Thi Huyen who finished in the top 15 of Miss World 2004, and Do My Linh who won the “Beauty with a Purpose” award.
The organizers of Miss World Vietnam, therefore, expect that their four-month-long competition will able to discover more beauties, adding another supply of top-quality candidates for Vietnam’s Miss World representatives.
The top-quality candidates will then increase Vietnam’s chances of success at global beauty pageants, with the latest instances being ethnic beauty queen H’Hen Nie, who became the first Vietnamese to make it to the top 5 of Miss Universe in Thailand last December, and Nguyen Phuong Khanh, who won Miss Earth 2018 to be the first beauty of her country to take the crown at one of the Big Four international pageants.

The beauty pageant organizers also believe that the more top-quality beauties are discovered through such contests as Miss World Vietnam, the more influencers who can inspire better life there will be.
On the other hand, in terms of economic benefits, the title holders of beauty pageants can bring the organizers lucrative business deals during their reigning periods.
According to a source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, a diamond sponsor of a 2016 beauty contest provided VND5 billion(US$215,000), two gold sponsors also donated about VND3 billion ($129,000) each, not to mention financial support from smaller sponsors.
