Hundreds of disabled Vietnamese children have been on a free trip to a famous resort island off south-central Vietnam where they engaged in activities to celebrate Children’s Day (June 1).

The 7th Disabled Children’s Festival took over 600 children to the Hon Tam Island off Nha Trang City in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on Friday.

Participants were selected from 40 schools across the nation who had different forms and levels of disability.

They took part in sports and arts activities such as swimming, tug of war, capture the flag, painting, chess and relay running.

Guardians and medics were available on site to provide medical care when needed.

The children spent a night on the island and woke up to more activities on Saturday including musical performances and a mass balloon release ceremony.

The annual Disabled Children’s Festival, held for the first time in 2013, has been certified by the Vietnam Record Association, which keeps track of national records, as the largest charitable event held on an island for disabled children in Vietnam.

The event is sponsored by a resort on Hon Tam Island as well as from donations by other private benefactors.

Located seven kilometers off Nha Trang, Hon Tam Island is famous for its beautiful beaches and magnificent coral reefs.

It was recognized as one of the most beautiful bays in the world in 2003, according to news site VietNamNet.
