Eighty paragliding athletes from Vietnam and Laos were gathered in Son Tra Peninsula in Da Nang for a paragliding competition on the weekend.

The Da Nang Open Paragliding Championship 2019, themed 'Bay tren Tien Sa,' literally meaning 'Flying over Tien Sa Port,' kicked off on Saturday and ended on Sunday.

Co-organized by the Department of Culture and Sports of Da Nang, the Da Nang People's Committee, and Da Nang Paragliding Club, the paragliding contest ws aimed at examining the technical capability of Son Tra as a paragliding destination and the managerial skills of the club, while also encouraging the development of this sport in Vietnam, said Nguyen Trong Thao, vice-director of the department.

During the flight, contestants were encouraged to impress the audience with stunts and complex flying techniques.

They started at the top of Son Tra Mountain, which is 693m above sea level, and landed on Tho Quang Beach, according to Nhan Dan Online.

The top of Son Tra Mountain is considered the most beautiful flying destination in Vietnam, making Son Tra Peninsula an ideal spot for national and international paragliders, many professional paragliders said at the event.

Even though it is considered one of the most dangerous sports, paragliding has been gaining attention from Vietnamese athletes because of the beauty of the sky and the opportunity to admire the breathtaking scenery of the mountains and nature from a panoramic view.

During the opening ceremony on Saturday, the audience also got to enjoy a unique paramotor performance.

Son Tra Peninsula is one of the famous tourist destinations in Vietnam, known for its amazing views, long white sandy beaches, and variety of activities provided.
