VN, Cambodia hail ASEAN’s common stance on East Sea

Visiting Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung consented to uphold ASEAN’s common stance on the East Sea issue mentioned in its Six-Point Principle on the East Sea. The consent was made during their talks in Hanoi on Thursday, during which they placed importance on maintaining peace and stability in the East Sea. The host and guest agreed that disputes related to the East Sea must be settled by peaceful means in line with international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. They also consented that the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea should be stepped up and the formulation of a Code of Conduct in the East Sea between ASEAN and China should be completed soon.

The leaders also reiterated their determination to conclude the border demarcation between the two countries as soon as possible. PM Dung highly valued Cambodia’s support for the Vietnamese community in the country and promised that the Vietnamese Government continues to give help the Cambodians in Vietnam. The two PMs also discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest and pledged to work closely together at multilateral frameworks like the United Nations, ASEAN and other regional and sub-regional cooperation mechanisms.  Following the talks, they witnessed the signing of ten cooperation agreements in the fields of extradition, trade promotion, transit of goods, Long Binh – Charay Thom bridge construction, education, training, media, and cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and the Cambodian Ministry of Interior. On the same day, PM Hun Sen, who arrived in Vietnam on Thursday for a three-day visit, also met with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, President Truong Tan Sang and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung.
