All nations must renounce the use of force as an option in their international relations, and instead settle all disputes by peaceful means, Deputy Prime Minister told the UN General Assembly last Saturday.

>> East Sea disputes must be settled based on int’l law: ex Japan PM Deputy PM Minh, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, made the statement when delivering a speech at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the U.S., on September 27 (local time). “It is our consistent position to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every state, and to settle international disputes and conflicts, including the East Sea issue, by peaceful means based on international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea UNCLOS,” the Vietnamese official said. He emphasized that peace and development are inseparable companions, which complement each other to form a prosperous world. “We are confident that with political will, mutual trust and equality based on international law, and responsible joint actions, we can build stronger partnerships for peace, cooperation and sustainable development for every nation,” Deputy PM Minh said. In its national socio-economic development and international integration, Vietnam always respects the roles and voices of multilateral institutions and forums, especially the UN, in the fields of international and regional security and development, Minh said. He noted that Vietnam is now an active and responsible member of important regional and global organizations, such as ASEAN, NAM, APEC and ASEM. Vietnam is trying its efforts to achieve all Millennium Development Goals and actively participating in the formulation of the post-2015 development agenda, the official said.

The 69th session of the UN General Assembly kicked off on September 16 afternoon (local time) under the chair of President of the UN General Assembly Sam Kahama Kutesa and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Representatives of 193 country members took part in the event.
