The Vietnam People’s Navy on Saturday held a ceremony, accompanied by a military parade, at the Cam Ranh military port in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa to commemorate its 60th anniversary.

The event was joined by Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and State President; Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member and chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front; Phung Quang Thanh, Politburo member and Defense Minister; Tran Dai Quang, Politburo member and Minister of Public Security; and many other senior leaders, both current and former, of Vietnam.

Speaking at the celebration, State President Truong Tan Sang emphasized that the navy needs to thoroughly understand and follow the viewpoints of the State and the Communist Party of Vietnam on national defense to protect the country’s sovereignty over seas and islands and settle disputes in the East Vietnam Sea, according to government website chinhphu.vn.

The president also requested that the Vietnam People's Navy highly promote self-reliance and build a revolutionary, elite and modern force.

He also asked the naval forces to maintain and use existing and new weaponry and technical equipment more effectively.

The state president required the navy to actively make new achievements in science-technology to boost research and development work for more innovations and inventions.

The navy should also enhance the quality of training, be ready to maneuver, and improve the management and protection of maritime sovereignty over the islands of the country, President Sang said.

On this occasion, on behalf of the Party and State, President Sang awarded the Order of the Hero of People's Armed Forces for the second time to the navy.

The history of the Vietnam People’s Navy

* May 7, 1955: Given the urgent demand for the management and protection of marine areas and islands in the north, pursuant to the resolutions of the General Military Commission, the Ministry of Defense issues a decree to establish the Seashore Defensive Bureau of Vietnam, the predecessor of the Vietnam People's Navy.

* August 24, 1955: The Shore Defensive Bureau of Vietnam puts together two main naval teams, the Lo River and Bach Dang River, named after two big rivers in the northern region. Late General Vo Nguyen Giap, then-Minister of Defense and Commander in Chief of the Vietnam People’s Army, said: "This is the first brick and the precursor of the Vietnam People's Navy in the future".

* January 24, 1959: The Ministry of Defense issues Decree No.322 / ND to establish the Navy Department based on the Seashore Defensive Bureau of Vietnam.

* October 23, 1961: The Ministry of Defense decides to set up Regiment 759 for sea transport. On October 19, 1962, the Phuong Dong (Orient) 1 ship successfully takes the first trip to carry weapons to Lung Vam in the southernmost province of Ca Mau to open the Ho Chi Minh Sea Trail. In October 1963, Regiment 759 is put under the direct command of the navy and renamed Naval Regiment 125.

* January 3, 1964: The Ministry of Defense issues Decision No. 01 / QD-QP to upgrade the Navy Department into the Naval Command with the mission to "command and lead the building of the navy, to assume the responsibility for combat operations in the airspace, territorial waters, and coastline of the northern region.”

* August  2, 1964: Division 3 under Torpedo Boat Battalion 135 with three vessels, 333, 336, and 339, attacks U.S. destroyer Maddox, which infringed upon Vietnam’s waters, forcing the U.S. vessel to flee, beginning the tradition of “Winning the First Battle” of the Vietnam People's Navy.

* The 1965-1968 period: The navy participates in the destructive war against the north launched by the U.S. On March 27, 1967, the Defense Ministry merges the Navy Command and the North East Military Zone into the Navy Command-cum-North East Military Zone.

* April 1975: The navy coordinates with the armed forces to attack and liberate many islands and ports, including the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago.

* Since 2010: The Vietnam People's Navy has been modernized and now has five forces: surface ships; submarines; artillery and land-based missiles; the Naval Air Force; and marine infantry, naval sappers, and island defensive forces.
