A deputy chairman who served the Ho Chi Minh City administration since 2016 was officially approved to abdicate his position after announcing several issues related to his personal health.

Le Van Khoa’s resignation was given the green light by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who has the ultimate power to accept or reject candidates previously appointed for posts in the city-level People’s Committee.

Khoa left his post on Monday, nearly two years before his term in office would have ended.

An extraordinary meeting of officials was convened on April 24 to discuss Khoa’s previously submitted resignation letter, during which the 57-year-old public servant shared that he had suffered from two strokes and doctors told him that his career might be endangering his health.

He said that he wished to leave the position so that another person “can do better for the city.”

Most of the officials present at the meeting agreed to approve the request.

Khoa served as chairman of the District 5 People’s Committee and director of the city’s Department of Industry and Trade before his appointment as vice-chairman of the municipal People’s Committee.

He was tasked with dealing with the metropolis’ problems in urban planning and development; land, resource, environment and housing management; transport; urban drainage; and investment procedures.
