Vietnam is thankful for the help of its international friends, including Russia, and is ready to contribute to the promotion of peace, stability, and international cooperation, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong told a top Russian diplomat on Wednesday.

General Secretary Trong’s remarks were made at a reception in Hanoi held during the visit of Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov during his official trip to Vietnam on July 5-6 at the invitation of his counterpart Bui Thanh Son.

Minister Lavrov thanked General Secretary Trong for the reception and conveyed greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chairman of the United Russia Party Dmitry Medvedev.

Expressing his pleasure in visiting Vietnam, Lavrov shared his appreciation for the Communist Party of Vietnam’s political position and leadership in the country’s development, as well as its foreign policy, including relations with the former Soviet Union and present-day Russia.

The Russian diplomat also discussed the outcomes of earlier talks and meetings with other Vietnamese senior officials during his visit and affirmed that Russia attaches importance to the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

He also thanked Vietnam for its contribution to promoting Russia-ASEAN relations over the past years and expressed Russia’s views on international issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Trong used his time at the reception to brief Lavrov on Vietnam’s major achievements during its comprehensive renovation process and how they have helped enhance the nation’s position and prestige in the international arena, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Trong also affirmed that Vietnam cherishes and supports international communities, including the great and effective help offered by the former Soviet Union and Russian Federation to the Southeast Asian country during its previous resistance wars and subsequent nation building and development.

Vietnam highly values its comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia, within the framework of its external policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, diversification, and multilateralization of foreign relations, the general secretary stated.

Based on Vietnam’s consistent external policies, Trong also shared Vietnam’s viewpoints on international issues of mutual concern, including dialogues and negotiations toward the peaceful settlement of international differences and disputes.

In its capacity as a friendly nation, reliable partner, and active and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam is ready to contribute to the promotion of peace, stability, and cooperation around the world, the Vietnam News Agency cited the Party chief as saying.

Trong also asked Lavrov to convey his best regards to Russian President Vladimir Putin and United Russia Party Chairman Dmitry Medvedev.

Before this meeting, the Russian foreign minister held separate talks with his counterpart Son and PM Pham Minh Chinh which focused on measures to further boost the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
