Vietnam’s State President Vo Van Thuong hosted a reception on Monday afternoon for ambassadors of ASEAN member states who came to send their congratulations and best wishes on the election and inauguration of Thuong as the new head of state.

Thuong was sworn in as state president in March.

Speaking at the event, Denny Abdi, Ambassador of Indonesia to Vietnam, stated that Vietnam has played a crucial role over the past 28 years in consolidating the solidarity and centrality of ASEAN and in building ASEAN Community Vision after 2025.

Vietnam’s GDP growth rate of 8.02 percent in 2022 will add the impetus toward regional economic growth, the Indonesian diplomat said.

The Indonesian ambassador pledged that ASEAN ambassadors will offer their active support and make enormous contributions to efforts to bolster the relations between Vietnam and ASEAN member states.

He added that under the sound leadership of the Vietnamese state president, the friendship and partnerships between Vietnam and other ASEAN nations will advance further, contributing to efforts to maintain peace, security, and stability in the region.

Vietnam attaches great importance to Vietnam-ASEAN relations

Addressing the reception, President Thuong expressed his thanks to the ASEAN ambassadors.

The Vietnamese head of state hailed the 2023 theme of ASEAN, which is 'ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth.'

He affirmed that Vietnam will accompany Indonesia as the Chair of ASEAN in 2023 and other ASEAN member states in achieving development in peace, prosperity, and harmony.

He added that ASEAN holds a key position and is an integral part of Vietnam’s foreign policy.

Vietnam has always attached great importance to its relations with Southeast Asian neighbors, he said.

Vietnam and neighboring Southeast Asian countries have been working closely in all important fields and they will expand into new areas.

The state leader expects that the ASEAN ambassadors would serve as crucial bridges and contribute more to boosting the friendship and cooperation ties between Vietnam and ASEAN member states.

On the occasion of the New Year of Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and the Ramadan in Muslim nations, President Thuong extended his best wishes to the leaders and people of these countries.
