The Vietnam-U.S. relations have thrived strongly thanks to the two nations’ efforts in connection and cooperation over the past many years.
Let us look back on the key milestones in such a long-lasting relationship on the occasion of U.S. President Joe Biden’s ongoing two-day state visit to Vietnam.
Former Secretary of State James Baker and late Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Co Thach met for the first time on September 29, 1990 to discuss the Vietnam-U.S. ties in New York.
On February 3, 1994, then-President Bill Clinton ordered an end to the trade embargo, which lasted for 19 years, on Vietnam and allowed the two nations to open a liaison office in the other's capital.
He announced the normalization of diplomatic relations between Hanoi and Washington on July 11, 1995.

Vietnam and the United States officially set up a comprehensive partnership during former President Truong Tan Sang’s U.S. visit, which started on July 24, 2013. As part of his visit to the U.S., he met and held talks with then-President Barack Obama.
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong began his five-day visit to the United States on July 6, 2015. The two nations announced the Vietnam-U.S. Joint Vision Statement during this trip, which was the first U.S. visit by the Communist Party's chief since the war ended, opening a new chapter for deep bilateral ties.
