U.S. President Joe Biden arrived in Hanoi on board the Air Force One plane on Sunday afternoon for a state visit to Vietnam lasting until Monday.
Many Vietnamese officials and diplomats, including head of the Central Committee for External Relations Le Hoai Trung, chairman of the People’s Council of Hanoi Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Vietnamese Ambassador to the U.S. Nguyen Quoc Dung, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc, head of the Directorate of State Protocol under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Viet Dung, and many other officials of the Central Committee for External Relations as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gathered at the airport to welcome the U.S. president and his entourage.
Biden’s entourage includes Secretary of State Antony Blinken, U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, and Deputy National Security Advisor John Finer, among others.
Biden’s visit comes at the invitation of Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The working trip marks the first time both the president and vice-president of the U.S. have visited Vietnam in a single term since the two countries established their diplomatic relations in 1995.
U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris visited Vietnam from August 24 to 26, 2021.
Biden's trip takes place at a time when both sides celebrate the 10th anniversary of their comprehensive partnership.
The U.S. highly evaluates the relations with Vietnam and considers the Southeast Asian country an important partner.
“President Biden's visit to Vietnam is a ‘powerful opportunity’ to advance Vietnam-U.S. relations in a way that will deliver for the American people and broader security, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region,” according to Sullivan.
Meanwhile, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc said the visit is a special event which shows that the U.S. attaches great importance to Vietnam's political institutions, the role of the Communist Party of Vietnam and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and Vietnamese leaders.
