Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly (NA) will elect a new state president at its sitting in October, NA General Secretary and NA Office Chairman Bui Van Cuong said on Monday.
Cuong said at a press briefing held the same day that the election would be made in line with the Party Central Committee’s resolution.
He highlighted the success of the recent extraordinary 8th session of the 15th NA, where key personnel were elected and approved with strong support.
NA deputies passed the appointments of three new deputy prime ministers on Monday, including Nguyen Hoa Binh, Ho Duc Phoc, and Bui Thanh Son.
Deputy Prime Minister Phoc continues serving as Minister of Finance until the legislature approves his replacement, Cuong said.
Deputy PM Son is still holding office as foreign minister.
Speaking at the press conference, chairwoman of the NA’s Committee for Deputy Affairs Nguyen Thanh Hai said that the Party Central Committee plans to focus on filling high-ranking leadership roles and Party positions at all levels until the end of the year.
This plan is aimed at enhancing the Party’s leadership over the development of the economy, society, culture, national defense and security, foreign affairs, as well as preparing for the upcoming grassroots Party congresses leading to the 14th National Party Congress, slated for 2026.
