Vietnamese leaders on Monday sent congratulatory messages to their Ukrainian counterparts on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine's Independence Day (August 24, 1991 - August 24, 2024).

In particular, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam extended his congratulations to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a congratulatory message to his Ukrainian counterpart Denys Shmyhal.

Chairman of Vietnam’s National Assembly Tran Thanh Man offered his congratulations to Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk.

Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son also wired a congratulatory message to his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba.

Vietnam and Ukraine established their diplomatic relations on January 23, 1992, nearly five months after the European country adopted the Declaration of Independence on August 24, 1991.

Vietnam opened its embassy in Kiev in 1992, while Ukraine opened an embassy in Hanoi in August 1997.

In March 2011, Vietnam and Ukraine reached a comprehensive partnership and cooperation.

After 30 years of diplomatic relations, the two nations have extended cooperation to politics, diplomacy, economy, trade, and education.

In May 2023, PM Chinh met with President Zelensky for a little while at a session themed ‘Toward a Peaceful, Stable, and Prosperous World' of the Group of Seven (G7) countries summit in Japan’s Hiroshima, according to the Vietnam Government Portal.

The Vietnamese government leader stressed that Vietnam attaches great importance to its traditional friendship with Ukraine and expressed his gratitude to the Ukrainian government for supporting the Vietnamese community in Ukraine.

Commenting on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine military conflict, PM Chinh affirmed Vietnam’s consistent stance of respecting the UN Charter and international law.

All disputes should be settled by peaceful means, the prime minister added.

The Southeast Asian nation offered humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine and stands ready to support the parties involved in seeking long-term peaceful solutions on the basis of international law and respect for their legitimate interests.

President Zelensky showed his appreciation for the stance and the humanitarian assistance from Vietnam and agreed to adopt measures to tighten the Vietnam-Ukraine bilateral ties.
