Vietnam is prepared to closely cooperate with the United States in receiving Vietnamese nationals deported from the U.S. in accordance with signed agreements, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated.

Speaking at a regular press briefing in Hanoi on Thursday, the ministry's spokesperson Pham Thu Hang affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to working with the U.S. on this matter.

Her remarks were in response to reporters' questions about Vietnam-U.S. coordination amid President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign targeting undocumented immigrants and those with prior criminal records, including Vietnamese nationals.

“In the past, the repatriation of Vietnamese citizens deported by the U.S. has been conducted based on a bilateral agreement on citizen returns. Both countries have maintained close, prompt, and effective coordination on this issue,” Hang stated.

She reiterated that Vietnam remains committed to cooperating with the U.S. in receiving deported citizens in line with signed agreements.

At the same time, she expressed hope that the U.S. would continue to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese citizens residing in the country, enabling them to contribute to its development and prosperity.

Hang also emphasized that the contributions of the Vietnamese community would further strengthen the Vietnam-U.S. comprehensive strategic partnership, which was established in September 2023, fostering peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.

She reaffirmed Vietnam’s support for its citizens living, studying, and working abroad, including in the U.S., as long as they comply with Vietnamese, local, and international laws.

“We hope the U.S. will continue facilitating the integration and contributions of the Vietnamese community in the country, thereby enhancing bilateral relations in the spirit of the comprehensive strategic partnership,” she said.

Newsweek cited the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as saying that 5,693 illegal immigrants were deported or removed to 121 countries in the first two weeks of President Trump's second term, which began on January 20.

This amounts to an average of approximately 407 deportations per day.

During Trump’s first term, 2.1 million removals were carried out, with the highest monthly total recorded in October 2020, when 91,120 immigrants were either deported or removed.
