Hanoi Football Club announced the signing of a contract with new Japanese coach Makoto Teguramori on Monday morning.

Following his appointment, Teguramori officially became the new head coach of Hanoi FC starting this month.

In the short term, he will lead the team through the second half of the 2024-25 V.League 1 season, which began on September 14, 2024, and is scheduled to end on May 25, 2025.

Based on the team’s performance by the end of the season, Hanoi FC will decide on further plans with the coach.

“Football is always evolving,” coach Teguramori shared on his first day at Hanoi FC.

“My goal is to experience new football environments and continue to learn.

“Vietnamese football is growing, and I was able to watch the V.League 1 match between Hanoi Police FC and Quang Nam FC right after arriving in Hanoi.

“It won’t be easy, but we will do our best to lift the trophy at the end of the season.

“We ask for your trust and support.”

Teguramori’s debut for Hanoi FC will be in round 14 of the 2024-25 V.League 1, when the team play away against Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC in Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province, on February 21.

Born in 1967, Teguramori led the Japanese U23 team to victory at the 2016 AFC U23 Championship in Qatar, securing a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In the Qatar tournament, he defeated coach Shin Tae Yong, who later led South Korea to defeat Germany in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Teguramori attended that World Cup as an assistant coach to Akira Nishino at the Japanese team.

He is also the former coach of notable Japanese stars, including Wataru Endo and Takumi Minamino, who play for Liverpool in English Premier League and Monaco in Ligue 1, respectively.

At the club level, he made his mark by guiding Vegalta Sendai to a runner-up finish in the 2012 J1 League season.

After Daiki Iwamasa, Teguramori has become the second Japanese coach to lead Hanoi FC.

With his experience managing strong teams in Thailand, Teguramori is expected to bring valuable knowledge of Southeast Asian football to help Hanoi FC increase their competitiveness and challenge for the V.League 1 championship this season.

The team are currently ranked fourth after 13 rounds.
