Vietnam has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son conveyed this stance to Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha during a phone conversation held on Monday at Ukraine's request.
Maintaining a balanced and objective position as a friend to both Russia and Ukraine, Vietnam continues to advocate for the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, Deputy PM Son stated.
He emphasized that all conflicts should be resolved through peaceful means, with the involvement of all relevant parties.
Vietnam supports and remains ready to participate in the international community's mediation efforts to achieve a long-term peaceful solution that involves all relevant parties, he added.
Minister Sybiha expressed deep gratitude for Vietnam’s position on the conflict and reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to maintaining a strong and cooperative friendship between the two nations.
Both officials agreed to continue diplomatic exchanges and facilitate political consultations at the deputy minister level.
This phone call came as the Russia-Ukraine conflict nears its third anniversary on February 24, 2025.
In a post related to the phone conversation on social media platform X on Monday evening, Minister Sybiha wrote: “We discussed the potential of our bilateral relations and the need to intensify high-level dialogue. We are working to enhance international support for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace.”
Recent actions by both the U.S. and Russia have raised hopes for potential negotiations to end the conflict.
Notably, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia on February 18.
According to Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary for Russian President Vladimir Putin, the meeting will primarily focus on restoring Russia-U.S. relations. However, both sides will also explore the possibility of negotiations to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Additionally, this meeting is part of broader efforts to pave the way for a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Putin.
Vietnam maintains friendly relations with Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S..
Last year, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was among the few world leaders to meet both Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
During his latest meeting with President Zelensky on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland last month, PM Chinh emphasized Vietnam's balanced, objective, and consistent stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to the Vietnam Government Portal.
The Vietnamese government leader reaffirmed that Vietnam stands ready to offer a venue and make every effort to organize peace-seeking activities for global conflicts.
As a responsible member of the international community, Vietnam hosted the second U.S.-North Korea summit in 2019 between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, garnering global attention and recognition.
