If you are annoyed by a spam SMS today, it is among the 9.8 million spam messages that are sent to Vietnamese mobile phone users on a daily basis, which helps the network operators rake in an enormous VND3 billion (US$143,000) a day from SMS fees. The mobile service providers thus enjoy a monthly profit of $4.3 million a month only from spam SMS, according to a recent report by Internet security company Bkav Corporation that was released Wednesday. Bkav surveyed 50,000 mobile phone subscribers in October, and found out that they received as many as 16,290 spam SMS on a daily basis. With the mobile phone market currently having at least 30 million subscribers, according to figures from the Ministry of Information and Communications, the number of unwanted SMS daily spreading to mobile phone users nationwide is some 9.8 million, the report suggested. Spam SMS has increasingly become a headache for local subscribers, as some individuals have taken advantage of the spam messages under the anonymous numbers to swindle from the recipients. Typical fraudulent SMS include those asking recipients to buy the prepaid cards, or telling them that they have won several non-existent prizes.
