Politics

-- The 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam yesterday convened the 11th meeting in Hanoi to decide on major issues of the nation, including the selection of senior leaders and the model of local administration as well as the construction of Long Thanh International Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai.

-- Ho Chi Minh City has forwarded the 5th urban railway project to the Prime Minister for submitting to the law-making National Assembly for approval to start its implementation in 2017. The national-level project would use major public investment capital, at US$1.68 billion. The railway will connect the Bay Hien Crossroads in Tan Binh District to the Saigon Bridge.

Society

-- Residents in the Ly Son island district of the central province of Quang Ngai organized Monday a traditional ceremony to honor those soldiers perishing while guarding Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago. The event is often held on the 16th day of the third lunar month.

-- Five major cities Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho will start checking the exhaust gas of motorbikes in 2018, according to a draft regulation of the Vietnam Register under the Ministry of Transport.

-- Many self-made air guns have been offered for sale in Ho Chi Minh City and other localities though they are totally banned.

-- Police in the northern province of Son La seized 160 heroin bricks, equivalent to 53kg, after exchanging fire with a group of 28 suspects on Monday.

-- Ho Chi Minh City police announced Monday that it recorded six fighting cases during the six-day public holiday that ended on Sunday. The figure was given to disprove reports that 300 city dwellers were hospitalized following brawls during the holiday. Police officers said that these 300 included those from other provinces and cities.

-- The cargo ship Royal 45 of the Southern Maritime Services JSC has been detained in Singapore since January 27. The vessel, which previously belonged to Agribank Leasing Company No.2 and was named Seaman, was involved in a lawsuit.

-- One hundred and six French enterprises have met requirements to export beef, pork, and chicken to Vietnam, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

-- Vietnam’s export turnover of farming and aquatic products reached $8.5 billion in the first four months of this year and thus dropped five percent against the same period last year, due to exchange rates and product quality.

-- FDI enterprises get more favors than domestic firms in Vietnam, according to a report by the Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research.

-- The Vietnamese national women’s football team thrashed Malaysia 7-0 on Monday in a match of Group B of the 2015 AFF Cup, taking place in Ho Chi Minh City. On May 2, Vietnam defeated Myanmar 3-2.

-- France’s former world table tennis champion Jean-Philippe Gatien yesterday had an exchange with Vietnamese fans at the table tennis club Ho Ngoc Thuan in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City.
