An elderly Vietnamese woman has recovered from a surgery to remove a giant tumor from her stomach.
As seeing her abdomen abnormally big, T.T.T.H., 56, living in the coastal city of Da Nang, asked for diagnostic sonography and discovered a tumor the size of a 7-month-old fetus.
Due to its rapid increase in size, the tumor made her struggle to eat and release body waste.
H. said that she then left for Hue Central Hospital, located in nearby Thua Thien-Hue Province, for medical examinations and diagnostic imaging on June 14.
Doctors found a lipoma occupying the patient’s entire abdomen, pushing the right kidney and colon leftwards, thus they decided to perform a tumorectomy on Friday.
“The operation was a success,” Doctor Pham Anh Vu from the Department of Pediatric and Abdominal Emergency Surgery of the Hue Central Hospital, said, adding that the tumor was benign.
The 35cm long, 25cm wide, 7cm high tumor weighed over 6kg, according to the surgeons, who said its huge size as well as its location, covered by the peritoneum, posed a great difficulty for the removal.
Currently, H.’s health status is stable and she is about to be discharged, the hospital said.
