Central weather forecasters have alerted the organizers of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings in Da Nang to the possibility of a storm, rain, and flood from this week as Vietnam is finalizing its preparations for the gatherings which world leaders will attend.
The national weather forecast service sent a document to the National Secretariat of APEC 2017 urging it to coordinate efforts to cope with stormy and rainy weather patterns accompanied by floods expected next week during the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week.
A spell of extremely heavy rains will hit Da Nang beginning Friday, the forecast service said, adding that a tropical depression has entered the East Vietnam Sea and will likely develop into a storm as it moves westward.
The storm may batter provinces and cities in the south-central and southern regions on Friday and Saturday, weather forecasters said, noting that a cold front will advance southward at the same time.
Under the combined influences of the two weather patterns, heavy rains lasting multiple days are expected to hit Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa Provinces.
Flash flooding and land collapses are highly anticipated in low-lying and urban areas in these localities.
A disaster response team will be deployed to Da Nang to prepare for any potential devastation caused by the situation, Hoang Van Thang, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said.
APEC is a regional economic forum established in 1989 comprised of 21 member economies, including Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam, among others.
Running from November 6 to 11, the Economic Leaders’ Week is expected to be attended by world leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
