As Vietnam enters its coldest spell of the year, the summit of Fansipan – the country’s highest mountain peak, situated in northern Lao Cai Province – has been filled with a layer of snow as temperatures drop below zero.
The cold front that chilled northern Vietnam over the weekend continued to spread throughout the northern and north-central regions on Monday, as temperatures approached freezing in mountainous areas.
At 7:00 am on Tuesday, temperatures dropped below four degrees Celsius across the northern provinces of Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Lang Son and Son La.
Temperatures in Lai Chau’s Sin Ho District, Son La’s Pha Din mountain pass, Lao Cai’s Sa Pa District and Lang Son’s Mount Mau Son were recorded at 2.8oC, 3.4oC, 3.3oC and 2.6oC.
At the summit of Fansipan in Sa Pa, snow fell late on Monday evening and early Tuesday morning and has coated everything on the ground in a blanket of white, transforming the peak into a breathtaking snow kingdom.

Dubbed the “roof of Indochina,” Fansipan is the highest mountain in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, peaking at 3,143 meters.
The mountain is located in Lao Cai, around nine kilometers southwest of Sa Pa in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.
This is the first snow observed in Lao Cai since the start of the cold season this year.
Bordering China to the north, Lao Cai is among the northernmost provinces of Vietnam, with occasional snow observed during winter.
Vietnam has entered its coldest time of the year, with temperatures dropping below 20 degrees Celsius at night and in the morning.
The tropical country’s temperatures usually average 30 degrees Celsius for most of the year.
