Cold weather hits northern Vietnam, downpours to dampen central region

Wednesday, December 27, 2017, 11:41 GMT+7

Temperatures are expected to drop in northern Vietnam, while downpours will pound the central region in the coming days, according to weather forecasts.

A cold spell forming north of Vietnam was traveling southward and began affecting the country’s northern localities on Tuesday evening, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting reported.

The weather was forecast to turn frigid on Wednesday, with mercury dropping to between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius, and below 10 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas.

The lowest temperature in Hanoi is expected to be 13 to 15 degrees Celsius.

Under the combined influences of the cold snap and wind convergence at high altitudes, it will rain in the northern region until Thursday morning.

Heavy downpours will also dampen central Vietnam, especially from the north-central province of Quang Tri to the south-central province of Phu Yen, during this period.

Strong winds and rough seas will start raging near the Gulf of Tonkin and the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea on Wednesday evening.

According to news outlet VnExpress, more cold fronts are anticipated to enter Vietnam until the Lunar New Year, due in mid-February, causing temperatures to plummet in the northern region.

Meanwhile, it is becoming warmer in southern Vietnam after Tyhpoon Tembin has dissipated.

Temperatures in most localities can reach 30 degrees Celsius.

The average temperature in Ho Chi Minh City is between 23 and 33 degrees Celsius.
