Delegates of the People’s Council of the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang have voted unanimously to select a new chairman for the decision-making organ, replacing a disgraced official who was dismissed from the post late last year.
Nguyen Nho Trung, vice-chairman of the People’s Council, received a 97.12 percent approval vote to become the council’s chairman on Monday, as delegates convened for a July 9 - 12 regular meeting.
Born in 1963 in the central province of Quang Nam, Trung holds a master's degree in law and used to work in the public security sector.
He was director of the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs and secretary of the Party Committee in Ngu Hanh Son District, before becoming head of the secretariat of the municipal Party Committee.
He was voted as deputy chairman of the city’s People’s Council for the 2016-21 tenure.

The new chairman will replace Nguyen Xuan Anh, who was stripped of his post as member and chairman of the municipal People’s Council in November 2017.
In October the same year, Anh was relieved from the position as secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee and had his membership in the Party Central Committee removed for multiple violations, including declaring fake degrees, and using cars and houses gifted by businesses.
During the gathering on Monday, delegates of the Da Nang People’s Council also selected Le Minh Trung, president of the Da Nang Political School, as the new vice-chairman of the municipal People’s Council.
Dang Viet Dung, chief of the Da Nang Party Committee’s propaganda department, was chosen as vice-chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee.
