One member of a family in Vietnam died and three others have been in medical care after they burned coal to stay warm on a chilly morning last weekend.
A hospital in Nghe An Province admitted four family members on Sunday, one of whom – a 75-year-old man – died before arriving at the infirmary.
The others, who are the man’s wife and daughter and her infant, showed irregular heart rhythms, difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness.
Doctors said they were suffering from a poisoning associated with carbon monoxide (CO) – a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that can be produced when coal is burned under conditions of insufficient oxygen supply.
The family said they set coal alight inside the house because they wanted to keep the baby and its mother warm when temperatures varied between 17 and 26 degrees Celsius in the northern region.
