Police in north-central Vietnam have detained a man suspected of unintentionally killing another man after mistaking him for a forest chicken while the two were hunting earlier this week.

Law enforcement said Trieu Van Minh, 35, was carrying a gun he built himself to hunt in the mountains of Thanh Hoa Province around 6:00 am on Monday.

Meanwhile, another local man, D., was also searching for game nearby.

When D., 24, began playing the sound of junglefowls on his cellphone as a decoy, Minh pointed his gun at the bush where D. was hiding and pulled the trigger.

Minh then came to the bush to collect his prey, only to find that D. was lying unconscious and bleeding.

D. was taken by Minh and local residents to a hospital but he later died.

Minh turned himself in to police on the same day.

The last death caused by a hunter mistaking another for a wild animal was reported a year ago, in late February 2018, in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong.
