A U.S. citizen has been sentenced to three years behind bars for drunk driving that led to the death of a Vietnamese woman last year.

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court on Tuesday condemned Shane Denoon, of U.S. nationality, to three years in prison for breaking regulations on road traffic.

Denoon was riding a motorbike on Nguyen Van Troi Street, from Phu Nhuan District to District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, at 4:00 am on January 27, 2018, according to court documents.

He crashed his bike into a bicycle ridden in the same direction by Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, a 50-year-old woman from District 1, when the U.S. man was around the middle of the Cong Ly Bridge.

Ngoc fell to the ground and died instantly.

Denoon was taken to Cho Ray Hospital in District 5 and survived.

The court documents also showed that the man had drunk alcoholic beverages before traveling on Nguyen Van Troi.

He failed to keep a safe distance from Ngoc, the court said.

His behavior breached regulations on road traffic, falling into the category of drunk driving.

The victim’s family had received VND200 million (US$8,600) in compensation from Denoon’s family and thus asked for a commutation for him.
