A female police officer has been fined VND200,000 (US$8.6) and is facing a suspension from work for yelling at an airline staff member at an airport in Ho Chi Minh City earlier this month.
The police unit at Tan Son Nhat International Airport has imposed the administrative penalty upon Le Thi Hien, a 36-year-old traffic police officer in Dong Da District, Hanoi.
The policewoman will be subject to a further penalty as her employer, the police unit in Dong Da District, has also proposed that the Hanoi police department issue a 30-day suspension for her before taking additional disciplinary action.
“Hien’s actions and words at the airport have violated the code of conduct of police officers,” the official stated.
According to the Southern Airports Authority, the incident happened at the domestic terminal on August 11.
Hien, who was about to take a Vietnam Airlines flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, wanted to check all of her luggage but she was asked to board with one of her suitcases as carry-on luggage, as her checked baggage had exceeded the weight limit.
The passenger agreed and headed to security screening.
After finding out she had lost her boarding pass, Hien returned to the check-in counter and started yelling at and insulting an airline employee on duty there.
As security officers interfered, the policewoman violently resisted and continued making a fuss at the airdrome.
The incident was filmed by some onlookers and attracted a lot of attention after the video of Hien verbally attacking the employee was uploaded to social media.
She was traveling with a young girl who appeared to be her daughter, according to the video clip.
