-- Upon learning about the January 29 plane crash in Washington, D.C., which resulted in multiple fatalities, State President Luong Cuong and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Friday sent messages of condolence to U.S. President Donald Trump. On the same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son also extended his condolences to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

-- The 60-kilometer Ho Chi Minh City - Thu Dau Mot - Chon Thanh expressway project, which is set to link Ho Chi Minh City, neighboring Binh Duong Province and the Central Highlands region, will get off the ground on Saturday, the fourth day of the Lunar New Year.

-- Traffic police handled over 4,800 traffic violations, impounded more than 2,300 vehicles, revoked 283 driver’s licenses, and deducted points from 808 licenses on Friday, or the third day of the Year of the Snake.

-- A ‘bun rieu’ (vermicelli soup) eatery in Hanoi was temporarily shut down for charging a staggering VND1.2 million (US$47.8) for just three bowls of soup on the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday, or Wednesday, an official from Bach Khoa Ward in Hai Ba Trung District said on Friday night.

-- Nearly 87,360 international tourists have visited Ho Chi Minh City during the ongoing Lunar New Year holiday, a 16.5 percent year-on-year increase, according to the municipal Department of Tourism.

-- Over 8,000 tourists, including international visitors, experienced island tours around Nha Trang City in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on the third day of the Lunar New Year holiday.

World News

-- U.S. authorities restricted helicopter flights near Reagan Washington National Airport on Friday, after a midair collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a military helicopter killed 67 people this week, according to Reuters.

-- A small plane carrying at least two people crashed in the vicinity of a shopping mall in Philadelphia, resulting in multiple casualties on the ground on Friday, Reuters reported, citing local media.
