A 17-year-old boy is suspected to have been killed during a high-speed police chase in the southern Vietnamese province of Binh Duong, while local traffic police have denied responsibility in the incident.

According to dashboard camera footage, which surfaced and went viral on social media on Wednesday, two motorbikes were seen travelling at high speed as they headed to a red light.

One of the motorcycles was ridden by a young man while the other was carrying two traffic police officers.

The man then mounted the sidewalk and fatally crashed into a utility pole, while the two officers ran the red light and zoomed out of sight without stopping to check on the victim.

Many viewers said in the comments they believed that the two officers had been chasing after the young man, which ultimately led to the fatal accident.

In a preliminary report on Thursday, the Binh Duong traffic police division confirmed that the incident occurred along National Highway 13 in Thu Dau Mot City on Monday night.

The victim has been identified as Tr. M. H., 17, a resident in Dau Tieng District.

Prior to the accident, local traffic policemen discovered a group of teenagers who were making loud noise and disturbing public order with their motorbikes.

The group dispersed as soon as they saw the officers.

The law enforcement also split up to chase after the offenders.   

The report does not state whether or not H. was among the teenagers who allegedly disturbed public order.

It claims that the fatal accident had already taken place before the officers passed by the area.

After spotting the crash, the officers checked on the victim and found out he had passed away, the report reads.

During a brief interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Wednesday, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Anh Kiet, head of the Binh Duong traffic police unit, stated that the officers in the video clip were patrolling the street and were not chasing after H.
