Police in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh on Thursday arrested a woman and his husband for producing a large number of counterfeit Vietnamese banknotes.
Bui Thi Dao, a 37-year-old woman from the northern province of Thai Nguyen, was caught red-handed using counterfeit money at her rented house in Hieu Tu Commune, located in Tra Vinh’s Tieu Can District, by the district’s police on Wednesday.
A search of the rented house uncovered 169 counterfeit banknotes with the face value of VND5,000 (US$0.22), one color printer, one laptop, one flash drive, 13 bogus ID cards, and some other tools for the production of counterfeit money.
An investigation into the case showed that Dao and Nguyen Huynh Minh Tam, her 35-year-old husband from Tra Vinh’s Cang Long District, purchased the aforementioned devices and tools in October this year, when they worked as day laborers in Ho Chi Minh City.
The couple relocated to Hieu Tu Commune and ran a small fruit trading business there since October 30.
Tam was able to produce about 600 counterfeit VND5,000 banknotes, while Dao used 431 of the fake bills to give change to her customers.
Police officers are still investigating the case.
