Health ministry announces 16,725 more COVID-19 cases, 26,031 recoveries in Vietnam

The Ministry of Health reported 16,725 new coronavirus patients across Vietnam on Thursday, in addition to 26,031 recoveries and 206 virus-linked deaths.

The latest infections, including 25 imported and 16,700 domestic transmissions, were recorded in all 63 provinces and cities, the ministry said, adding that 10,822 were infected in the community.

Hanoi logged 2,968 of the newest local cases, Ho Chi Minh City 701, Khanh Hoa Province 677, Da Nang 657, Hai Phong City 497, Dak Lak Province 417, Bac Ninh Province 346, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 329, Quang Ninh Province 294, Thua Thien-Hue Province 290, Lam Dong Province 238, Quang Nam Province 201, Binh Thuan Province 150, Can Tho City 130, Dong Nai Province 104, and Binh Duong Province 24.

Vietnam had registered 28,222 domestically-acquired infections on Wednesday.

The country has confirmed 1,969,294 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave erupted on April 27, 2021. Nearly 1.66 million of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City suffers the most with 510,202 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 291,584, Dong Nai Province with 99,069, Tay Ninh Province with 84,070, Hanoi with 79,608, Dong Thap Province with 46,144, Can Tho City with 43,382, Long An Province with 40,923, Tien Giang Province with 34,809, An Giang Province with 34,744, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 28,741, Binh Thuan Province with 27,731, and Da Nang with 15,996.

Vietnam detected only 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry pronounced 26,031 patients recovered on Thursday, bringing the tally to 1,661,930.

The toll has mounted to 35,170 fatalities after the ministry documented 206 mortalities on the same day, including 30 in Dong Thap Province, 19 in Ho Chi Minh City, 14 in Vinh Long Province, 13 in Hanoi, 11 in An Giang Province, 11 in Tien Giang Province, and the remaining in 27 other provinces and cities.  

Vietnam has recorded 1,975,444 patients, including 50 imported Omicron infections, since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country in early 2020.

The Omicron cases, all quarantined upon arrival in the Southeast Asian country, consist of 27 in Quang Nam Province, 12 in Ho Chi Minh City, three in Da Nang, two in Thanh Hoa Province, two in Khanh Hoa Province, one in Hanoi, one in Hai Duong Province, one in Hai Phong City, and one in Long An Province.

Health workers have administered over 164.4 million vaccine doses, including 927,829 shots on Wednesday, since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8, 2021.

Upwards of 78.4 million of the country’s 98 million people have received at least one dose while above 71.7 million have been jabbed twice.

The number of third doses – including additional primary shots for immunocompromised people, boosters, and third jabs of Cuba’s Abdala vaccine – has topped 14.3 million.
