The pilot phase of the first-ever electric bus service in Ho Chi Minh City was launched on Tuesday morning.
Vinbus Ecology Transport Services Company, a subsidiary of Vietnamese private conglomerate Vingroup, organized a ceremony to put into operation its first e-bus route in the city.
The service is connected with the public transport system of the southern metropolis.
The e-bus route, numbered D4, starts at Vinhomes Grand Park in Thu Duc City and ends at Saigon Bus Station in District 1.
It runs through areas with high travel demand such as new urban areas, companies, factories, and the administrative center of Thu Duc City.

The service is operated from 5:00 am to 9:15 pm on a daily basis, with each trip starting every 20 minutes.
The fare is at VND7,000 (US$0.3) per passenger and VND3,000 ($0.13) per student.
Each bus has the capacity of 65 to 70 passengers.

Local authorities have been aiming to develop Ho Chi Minh City in a civilized, modern, and sustainable manner in recent years, Tran Quang Lam, director of the city’s Department of Transport said at the ceremony.
Developing a modern public transport network with electric bus routes is among the important tasks, Lam continued.
The pilot phase of this high-quality e-bus service will help create an advanced and eco-friendly public transport system, as well as to encourage local residents to limit the use of personal vehicles, the official stated.
