Following many comments on social media regarding the 'too costly' price of a bowl of chicken pho – a noodle soup made of chicken broth and rice noodles – at an eatery in Da Nang City, located in central Vietnam, the shop’s head has given her explanations.

Over the past several days, social media has been stirred up by a post of a bill showing the price of VND295,000 (US$13) charged for a bowl of chicken pho at the Noodle House in Da Nang’s Son Tra District on March 16.

The post has commanded special attention from many netizens who commented that such a price was too high or exorbitant.

This image shows a bill, posted on social media, showing a bowl for chicken pho was priced at VND295,000 (nearly $13) at the Noodle House in Vietnam’s central Da Nang City.

To verify this story, reporters of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Monday contacted the shop, which also offers steamed glutinous rice with chicken, chicken rice, and various drinks.

This eatery offers many types of pho at varied prices, depending on the ingredients used for each type.

The highest price, VND295,000, is charged for 'the best Trang An pho,' which is prepared from different parts of Dong Tao chicken, a rare Vietnamese chicken breed prized for its delicious meat, including legs, wings, thighs, heart, liver, testicles, and baby chicken eggs, said Ngo Thi Nhu Thao, the shop’s head.

Meanwhile, other common types of pho are priced at VND45,000 ($1.98), VND65,000 ($2.86), VND85,000 ($3.74), VND95,000 ($4.18), and VND155,000 ($6.82), depending on their ingredients.

All these prices are listed on an electric panel at the cashier’s counter and in the menus given to diners, Thao stated.

She asserted that the eatery serves diners the very type of pho they have ordered and the shop has never randomly charged any bowl of chicken pho at VND295,000.

Therefore, the malicious comments given by some people about the shop’s prices have caused damage to its brand as well as reputation, Thao said.

This eatery, seated in the My Khe Beach tourism area, has been open for just over one week, targeting tourists and high-income customers.

Originating in northern Vietnam, pho is a noodle dish served with hot broth cooked from beef or chicken.

In addition to Da Nang, the Noodle House has its branches in Hanoi, Nha Trang, and Ho Chi Minh City.

Pho has not only long been considered the country’s national dish, but it has also become popular with diners in many other countries in the world.

Last year, CNN Travel ranked pho 28th in its selection of the world's 50 best foods published in a story in April 2021.
