The People’s Court in Tay Ninh Province, southern Vietnam on Wednesday sentenced two men to death for transporting 20 kilograms of narcotics in 2021.
The death penalties were handed down to Nguyen Le Hong Phuc, 26, and Huynh Thanh Tai, 28, for the illegal transportation of narcotics.
Phuc was also given a three-year jail term for the illegal possession of military equipment.
On May 13, 2021, Phuc received a phone call from a Vietnamese man who called himself Den and lived in Cambodia.
Den offered Phuc VND40 million (US$1.690) to deliver about 20 kilograms of drugs to his buyers.
Phuc agreed and called Tai on the following day to ask for assistance.
Around noon on May 15, Phuc received directions from Den and told Tai to fetch a backpack containing stimulants in an area near Vinh Loc Industrial Park in Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City.
Tan later brought the backpack, which contained 20 plastic bags of ketamine weighing 20 kilograms, 150 pills of ecstasy, and 201 bullets, to Phuc’s house.
Phuc kept the bullets at his home before he and Tai delivered some eight kilograms of ketamine to Den’s clients in the city.
The two men arrived in Tay Ninh Province on May 17 to make more deliveries.
Phuc stayed in Hoa Thanh Town, Tay Ninh and Tai stayed in Trang Bang Town in the same province while they waited for further directions from Den.
Phuc was caught red-handed by police in Tay Ninh shortly after.
Officers later search Tai’s place in Trang Bang Town and Phuc’s house in Ho Chi Minh City and find the remaining narcotics along with the bullets.
