Police in Ho Chi Minh City said on Sunday that they successfully collaborated with colleagues from three other provinces in arresting five people who had stolen over 3,000 fashion bags worth more than VND600 million (US$25,450) from a warehouse at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

The five arrested men are Tran Van Trong, 35, from northern Bac Ninh Province, Huynh Long Duy, 31, Nguyen Van Duong, 30, Huynh Long Hao, 29, from central Quang Ngai Province, and Nguyen Van Cuong, 45, from central Quang Nam Province.

The arrest was the result of an investigation launched after P.T.H.P., a representative of B.P Soc Trang Company, made a police report that her firm had more than 3,000 handbags stolen, which are valued at over VND600 million.

The fashion bags were included in a shipment of more than 17,000 products transported from the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang to a warehouse at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Tan Binh District for air shipping, according to P.’s report.

During the investigation, police officers found that Huynh Long Duy had asked Nguyen Van Cuong, who worked as a trucker and often delivered goods to the airport, to inform Duy of every new shipment so that the 31-year-old could thieve them.

Duy, Tran Van Trong, Huynh Long Hao, and Nguyen Van Duong went to the aforementioned warehouse and stole the 3,000 handbags on November 24 after Cuong gave them the information of the shipment.

They used tricks to open the door bolts of the cargo compartment of the box truck carrying the goods without damaging its seal.

They also hired a facility to print the company’s packing tape lookalike in advance, so that after slitting the boxes of handbags and purloining a part of them, they used this tape to wrap the boxes again.

The five men carried out the theft at the parking lot of the said warehouse.

Thanks to the collaboration with colleagues from Bac Ninh, Quang Ngai, and southern Binh Duong Province, police in Ho Chi Minh City managed to arrest the five suspects.

The investigation is still underway.
