One person was killed and 26 others were injured after two coaches collided on Monday on a section of the approach road of the Da Nang – Quang Ngai Expressway in Tu Nghia District, Quang Ngai Province, central Vietnam.
The accident happened at about 1:45 am when the two coaches were running in opposite directions.
The coach drivers were Le Quy Dung, 48, residing in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa, and Nguyen Xuan Nam, a 49-year-old resident of Tu Son Town, Bac Ninh Province, northern Vietnam.
The coach driven by Dung was carrying 44 passengers who are executives and employees of a company in southern Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province to Thanh Hoa Province to celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.
Meanwhile, there were 10 people on the coach driven by Nam.
A person on the coach driven by Dung died on the spot. The 26 injured people included 23 passengers on Dung’s coach and three others on Nam’s vehicle.
The two coaches were badly damaged after the accident.
According to the traffic police division under the Quang Ngai Police, Dung encroached on the lane and collided with the coach driven by Nam.
“Dung was sleepy after traveling a long distance and he was not familiar with the route, so he encroached on the lane and caused the crash," a leader of the Quang Ngai traffic police division said.
The section where the accident happened has no median strip but a large volume of vehicles.
