A woman in Bac Giang, a province in northern Vietnam, was fined VND5 million (US$212) by the provincial Department of Information and Communications for posting an inappropriate video, which showed a group of women dancing provocatively at a local pagoda, on TikTok.
The administrative fine was imposed on T.T.G., a 38-year-old resident of Bac Giang, for posting content that was not in line with local customs and traditions on social media.
In the video uploaded by G. on TikTok, four women wearing pink shirts dance provocatively in the garden of Bo Da pagoda, where the ashes of more than 1,200 monks are kept, in Viet Yen District.
The video went viral on TikTok before drawing public backlash, with many netizens saying it is offensive, and the attention of local police.
In response to the incident, local authorities demanded that G. remove the video from social media.
Bo Da pagoda is a unique and distinct example of architecture and differs from traditional pagodas in the northern region, according to the Department of Cultural Heritage under the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The pagoda is often compared to a museum of architectural art, combining the styles of the 18th and 19th centuries in Vietnam, with intricate carvings.
