The Hanoi Department of Tourism has asked local travel companies not to take foreign tourists to visit, take photos, and drink beverages on a famed ‘train street’ where coffee shops are just inches from the active railway.
The department’s requirement is aimed at ensuring traffic safety for tourists because many have visited the street snaking through Hoan Kiem and Ba Dinh Districts for photoshoots.
Some groups of tourists have been transported to a level crossing at 5 Tran Phu Street in Hang Bong Ward, Hoan Kiem District, causing traffic jams, posing a high risk of traffic accidents, and putting pressure on railway guards.
As a result, the municipal Department of Tourism told tour operators to call on travelers, especially foreigners, not to go to the site, drink coffee, and take photos there.
In September last year, a South Korean tourist was hit by the Lao Cai - Hanoi train while trying to take pictures at the famous trackside café street.
The accident happened as the tourist ignored the sirens and safety barriers.
The impact sent the visitor into the wall, but left her with only scratches.
The collision forced the train to make a sudden stop, causing traffic clogging on adjacent Dien Bien and Tran Phu Streets.
