Major gateways in Ho Chi Minh City were crammed with vehicles on Friday as thousands of people rushed to leave the metropolis for a five-day holiday.

Laborers in Vietnam on Friday began their holiday marking Hung Kings Commemoration Day, taking place on the 10th day of the third lunar month, which fell on April 29 this year, Reunification Day (April 30), and International Workers’ Day (May 1).

Many people reached the Mien Tay Coach Station in Binh Tan District from 3:00 pm on Friday to buy coach tickets to return to their hometowns.

Some said that they were off on Friday to avoid the congestion.

However, vehicles were traveling at a snail’s pace on roads near the coach station.

The An Lac Intersection in Binh Tan District was also overcrowded from noon to 3:00 pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, traffic came to a standstill on a road from Vo Van Kiet Avenue to National Highway 1 in Binh Chanh District.

Xo Viet Nghe Tinh Street leading to the Mien Dong Coach Station in Binh Thanh District faced the same fate.

The domestic passenger terminal of Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Tan Binh District was also crammed with passengers.

At check-in desks, people were queuing up to complete procedures.

In the Cat Lai ferry area, a major link between Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring Dong Nai Province, motorbikes and cars formed a line of some 100 meters to get on the ferry at 5:00 pm.

The volume of vehicles increased in the evening.

The ferry area is forecast to be overcrowded during Saturday.
