Police in Hue City, located in Thua Thien-Hue Province, central Vietnam, have apprehended two local men over allegations that they were involved in human organ trade.
The suspects were identified as Nguyen Thanh Tu, 33, a native of southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, and Nguyen Van Nghia, 33, a resident of southern Ben Tre Province, police said on Thursday.
According to police officers, Tu met Phan H., a native of Hue City who was in medical treatment for his kidney failure at Hue Central Hospital, in October 2021.
Tu suggested that he would help H. buy a kidney for transplantation and H. agreed.
Later, Tu requested Nghia to search for kidney sellers.
Nghia negotiated with Nguyen Dinh T., a 33-year-old resident in Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, on buying the latter’s kidney at VND360 million (US$12,823).
Meanwhile, Nghia and Tu offered the kidney to H. at VND800 million ($34,147).
H. accepted the deal and paid an advance of VND300 million ($12,816) to Tu.
Tu gave the amount of money to Nghia and got back VND50 million ($2,135) as a brokerage fee.
However, H. failed to undergo a kidney transplant as previously dealt with Tu as well as could not get back the advance money, prompting him to report the issue to police officers.
